Overview

Longer, wider and slightly lower than the outgoing model, the new A4 features evolutionary styling that makes it clearly an Audi, yet shows the latest iteration of that Audi style.
In addition to being wider and lower, the front overhang is considerably shorter while the hood is longer than before. The longer wheelbase should provide a smooth, responsive ride, which will be further enhanced by the all-new dynamic suspension.

Headlights are the most striking styling cue, with design similar to that of the recently introduced A5/S5; also the LED running lights that were first found on the exotic R8. The lights are integrated aside the signature Audi grille, and newly designed fog lights are moved to the edges of the front fascia.

Rear taillights wrap around the rear corners, flush with the sheet metal. Doors are sculpted with lines angling up from the front wheels, adding to the sporting look.

With the increase in size, the interior of the A4 is quite roomy. Sitting in the rear seat, we were surprised at how much legroom was available, even with the front seat set to a realistic position. Front seats are also quite comfortable. The trunk space is quiet impressive, with considerably more room than the outgoing model.

A4 will be available with a number of new high-tech safety features, including Audi lane assist, which warns the driver by vibrating the steering wheel if the car moves out of the lane without the turn signal activated. Radar sensors in the rear bumper warn the driver via a light on the side mirror if a vehicle is in the A4’s blind spot.

The A4 arrives in North America this fall as a 2009 model, and will be launched with the 3.2-liter V6. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely that by that time, the A4 will be made available with Audi’s upcoming 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged gasoline engine. Not only is this engine expected to have the power and torque of a V6, it will likely be quite fuel-efficient.
